Anniversary Quilt
Last April my sweetheart Tavi and I celebrated three years of marriage. We have eschewed the prescribed anniversary gifts, unsurprisingly. While I haven’t written up a marriage manifesto (not YET!), I believe that as the first generation of marriage-equality-married-dykes in the US we get to make our own non-het traditions and practices and define marriage our own way*. So, also unsurprisingly, I made Tavi a quilt. Sometimes a quilt can be a little snapshot of a moment, and this one certainly is. It reminds me of the red sun we’ve seen this year from the wildfires, of the many moons we’ve watched together, and of the deep sense of ease that I feel whenever Tavi is near. I finally got grommets into it and we put it up in our new bedroom. It’s all linen and contains:
A bit of mauve** reclaimed from a worn out fitted sheet that an internet acquaintance mailed me.
Sun-bleached yellow from a friend’s old curtains.
Peachy pink scraps, naturally dyed by fellow makers in Detroit.
Two-tone grey from a duvet I thrifted (I made this fabric into a dress too!).
Scraps of binding from a quilt that my friend bought to wrap around her love.
* I don’t wanna scare anyone, but THIS IS TRUE FOR YOU TOO!! No matter how you identify!!
**This fabric launched a serious mauve obsession in me. As a kid I was way into purple and baby I am BACK! Mauve! A magic color! Cover me in mauve!
